I started my journey on linux by using the latest Ubuntu back in january 2021, and then after around a month i went back to windows 10 simply cause i didnt know what i was doing and if it broke, i wouldn't know where to even start to know how to fix it (let alone all the stuff i did play / need wasn't supported yet.)

How i started

January 2021: Ubuntu, lasted about a month before going back to windows 10.

May 2025: Windows broke, so i decided to try Arch Linux, survived about ~7 months before realizing i need windows software.

January 2026: Dualbooting arch w/ windows.

theres alot more notable times i've tried linux and distros, however i dont wanna go on a 5 minute rant of every distro i've used.

Overview

there is so many distros that its hard to choose!

here we will go over whats right for you.

if your into gaming, i'd choose from:

Bazzite (Fedora based, comes pre-installed with steam, and is a good choice)

CachyOS (Arch based, has HEAVY optimizations for gamers, and is a good choice all round, i use this personally on my systems)

if you just wanna get off windows:

Linux Mint (Good for people who are just coming from windows, and don't really know linux)

Honorable Mentions:

Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE instead of gnome)

Manjaro (Arch based, and is sort of having a comeback after many years)

Personal pick

CachyOS. its great for gaming (OOTB), its great for getting into the world of linux if you are just starting out (not as much as mint, but still great all-round) and probably has the best defaults ive seen in a while when it comes to distros.
